All American Picnic & Time Capsule Opening
Bring your picnic dinners, and the library will provide cookies, lemonade, live music, and kids crafts! At 6:30pm, witness the unearthing of a literal story: the 1976 Bicentennial time capsule!
That’s right, in 1976, Chelsea residents buried a time capsule in the library lawn to be opened 50 years later. Local families were invited to put family records, souvenirs, voice recordings, and letters inside the time capsule, to be distributed to their future descendants upon the capsule’s opening. Newborn baby Jayma Ayn Spears, the Chelsea baby born closest to the date of the time capsule burial, was named “keeper of the key” and given the honor of presiding at the future opening of the capsule. 50 years have come and gone, and it’s time to Unearth a Story! Jayma Ayn Bollinger (neé Spears) will open the capsule and help distribute the contents.
