What it means to be an IRS EA
As an enrolled agent I have earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns. The enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. To maintain this elite status I must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years.
Like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPAs), I have unlimited practice rights. This means I am unrestricted as to which taxpayers I can represent, what types of tax matters I can handle, and which IRS offices I can represent clients before. Unlike, attorneys and CPAs, I am not limited to the state in which my license is with. Because my priviledge is awarded by the Internal Revenue Service, I am able to represent clients in all states.
