Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights features free weekly performances in downtown Chelsea

Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights: 2017 Season runs June 8 – August 17

Sounds and Sights on Thursday Nights, presented by Golling Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chelsea, is pleased to announce its 2016 season lineup. This year’s schedule kicks off June 8 and runs every Thursday through August 17, showcasing a variety of music, art, comedy, and family entertainment.

Now in its 13th year, the outdoor concert series is recognized for its mixture of music from jazz to country to indie rock and more.  Every Thursday, eleven acts perform on eleven separate-staged areas throughout downtown Chelsea (located 14 miles west of Ann Arbor) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The 2017 lineup includes more than 120 performances throughout the summer and features the return of many regional favorites as well as 25 new acts making their Sounds & Sights debut.

“This year we had a pool of more than 200 talented artists apply to perform. This made selection and scheduling a challenge, but the result is a phenomenal line up with a variety of acts,” commented co-organizer Craig Common.

“As you walk downtown, you can see returning favorites like Cold Tone Harvest, Chelsea House Orchestra, and Bull Halsey, who have performed at Sounds & Sights in the past, mixed in with fresh talent like Chey Halliwill, “GFK Trio”, and Trey Connor. It is exciting to see the progression of veteran acts and to discover something new each week.”

In addition to the music, the 2017 schedule includes magic, face painting, balloon artists, jugglers, dancers, interactive art demonstrations and comedy.

In partnership with Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, and sponsored by Friends of Chelsea District Library, The Chelsea District Library’s Comedy Showcase presents professional comedians the first four weeks of Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights. That stage with outdoor seating is located at Katie’s Korner on the library lawn and features premier comics from around the country.

Chelsea Chalk Art’s  “Learn to Draw” series, led by renowned competitive chalk artists, takes place weekly under the Chelsea Clocktower.  Free chalk and templates are available for everyone to draw on the pavement.

The sights continue on Jackson Street with an outdoor summer installation called Chelsea Portrait Project.  Students from the Young Adult Program and students of Independence Hall at Chelsea High School worked with artist mentors to paint abstract self-portraits. Visitors can also explore SculptureWalk Chelsea, a self-guided walking tour of 12 juried sculptures which are a part of a yearlong community arts project.

After Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights, SRSLY Cinema presents free outdoor movies at dusk. Visit www.srslychelsea.org for details.

Sounds and Sights Festival: July 27 thru 29

In addition to the eleven week Thursday night schedule, a three day “Sounds and Sights Festival” will take place July 27 thru 29. The festival, now in its 41st year, helps raise the funds necessary to support the free Thursday nights concert series. Visit www.chelseafestivals.com/festival for a list of events that take place throughout the weekend, including a kid zone, indie art market, car show, chalk art contest and live music.

“Sounds and Sights is an essential part of our initiative to increase vibrancy for our community and local merchants, while at the same time supporting local arts. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, the financial support we receive from both the festival and our loyal sponsors continues to allow us to put on a first class, free event,” says Common.
